Kids Making a Difference

How many 8-year olds do you know who have started non-profit organizations? I occasionally hear of kids doing things that make a difference but until I read about Stephanie I couldn't remember reading about anyone quite so young..

When Stephanie was 8 years old, she read a newspaper article about an injured baby manatee.  The wonderful thing about kids that age is they honestly believe that they can make a difference. Stephanie certainly did. She made manatee pins and sold them to friends and family to raise money and public awareness about these gentle giants. Other kids heard what she was doing, and they wanted to help. This grassroots effort led to the formation of the organization Kids Making a Difference.

Kids Making a Difference (KMAD) is now 8 years old, and a non-profit organization run by kids, for kids. KMAD activities include coming to the aid of animals in need, recycling, and helping to clean up city streets.

I really like the idea that our future is in the hands of children like these. If you know of any interesting stories of kids making a difference please share them. In fact, we will soon be publishing a book on this topic so kids will have role models to emulate. Which reminds me, if you have any book topic ideas you would like us to publish, let us know.

Dear Bob,

As always, Thank You for the informative newsletter and web links. Though in Toronto, Canada,
I have occasion to use and share some of the stories you offer. And I want to share with you, and hope that you will include this comment and pass the information on to your readers about another amazing young person.

Bilaal Rajan has been a fundraiser since age four and now is a UNICEF Canada Child representative. I had a chance to read his book MAKING CHANGE and know that it is not only an inspiring story of a young fundraiser and his family, but also it is a curriculum tool that other teachers could use for it contains step by step instruction regarding fundraising.

I am enclosing the Making Change URL and do hope you will bring this publication to the attention of others. http://bilaalrajan.com/

Yes, I see students who contribute to the community on a daily basis. As educators and administrators, we should foster this by awarding these students and not continue the practice of awarding the teachers, administrators students, playing politics as the status quo. We are just creating another generation of selfish students who do not grasp the concept of morality, community service to others, and hard work to achieve, who feel they are entitled to something just because of their name, etc. It is sickening to see the lack of consideration, bad manners, and lack of remorse and entitlement passed on from one generation to the next. Parents, start being a role model and take the time to teach them. It is this selfishness and greed that has cost our country power, prosperity, and our current recession.

Dear Bob,
I've enjoyed your site for several years now. Today I printed the "President Theme Pack" for my class.
I also wanted to tell you about a young person of my acquaintance. She is 4 years old and has already given her hair once. (When asked why she was getting a hair cut, the at the time 3 year old said, "I'm giving it to some poor little girl who is sick.")
Also, this past Christmas, when other family members were getting excited and preparing for a craft fair at the local fire department, she asked her mommy if she could have a table and sell Christmas ornaments that she would make. As the day grew nearer, she was asked what she planned to do with the money and her reply was "I want to buy Christmas presents for a poor little girl."
This generous soul hasn't thought of formally fundraising, but if she hears about it, I have no doubt but that will be next!

I am really enjoying reading your well written articles. It looks like you spend a lot of effort and time on your blog. I have bookmarked it and I am looking forward to reading new articles. Keep up the good work!

With the recession and all I personally believe that getting access to free content is crucial! I really appreciate it!
