The Transformative Power of Reading: One Man, Two Burros, and 4,800 Books

I know about libraries and bookmobiles, but this was the first time I’d heard of a Biblioburro. About a decade ago, Colombian schoolteacher Luis Soriano decided to share his collection of books with people who do not have books. Soriano believes in the transformative power of reading. He says that providing books for people who don’t have books can improve the impoverished region in northern Colombia where he lives.

Nearly every weekend for the last 10 years Soriano and his burros, Alpha and Beto, travel with textbooks, encyclopedias, and novels from Soriano’s personal library. Eager children wait at stops along the way.

Soriano’s personal library was small—perhaps 70 books—until he reached out to noted Colombian author and journalist Juan Gossaín. Soriano had listened to Gossaín read excerpts from his newest novel over the radio. He wrote to the author and asked if he’d lend a copy of the book to the Biblioburro. After Gossaín broadcast details about the Biblioburro on his radio program, book donations poured in from all over Colombia—4,800 of them.

Traveling with his Biblioburro is not without risks: Soriano once fractured his leg from a fall and has been accosted by bandits who, after tying him to a tree, stole a book by Paulo Coelho. “For some reason Coelho is at the top of everyone’s list of favorites,” he grinned. Still, it’s worth it. Recently, as a girl read from a book of poetry she said, “That is so beautiful, Maestro. When are you coming back?”

At Learning A-Z, we’ve made providing books our mission too. We don’t trek across the landscape with books atop a burro. We’ll leave that to the commendable Maestro Soriano. But we do make it our business to get books into the hands of teachers and children the world over. We are even planning to print out and send a few boxes of our Spanish version Reading A-Z books to the maestro so he can hand them out along the way for children to keep.

I learned about Maestro Soriano while watching Spanish TV in Phoenix AZ where I live and teach. It's wonderful to know that there are teachers like him who devote so much effort to transmit their love of books to children in need. Being from Mexico myself, I know how hard it can be for children in Latinamerican countries to have access to literature. I'm sure they will greatly appreciate any books that you can send them. My admiration and appreciation to readinga-z for this great service.

What a great service to the children of Columbia. I am studying to become a teacher and I am truly humbled by the example Luis Soriano sets for all teachers everywhere. That is truly going the extra mile. Luis I would love to hear from you sometime. Thanks once again.

I am a doctor by profession... but a bibliophile by nature. If it is a printed word- I must read it! Back of an envelope, a shopping bag, a magazine or a book- they all hold me in a magical spell. It was this love of the language that prompted me to start sharing my own library with the neighbourhood children. For some time it was doing great.. then the children and their parents had more pressing things that were paying to do. And a book club that was free was somehow not on priority... I still throw open my doors to my children's friends. All I ask is for the books to be rereturned in good condition so that some more may enjoy them. If you know of any network that can help me share thetreasure trove that I have ( I am in India, New Delhi), I would love to be part of it!

Good for him! We actually raise burros here in Florida and they are from ferrel stock for BLM> my breeding pair came from the Mojave desert and these animals are tough and very wonderful. I am planning on bringing mine to my school where I teach as we have no money or funding for field trips this year. My message is to encourage kids to read using Brighty ( the burro of the Grand Canyon) as a model. Your story has inspired me to tell the kids of Soriano and his biblioburros, and how luck we are to have books to read. Thank you for sharing his story, his love for children and his message of hope through books. Thanks A-Z for all you do to promote literacy, no matter where it is needed

How can I send books to him?

As an educator of elementary students in Verona,NJ, I am inspired by Luis' story. I will share his quest with my students who are learning Spanish and who can relate to the importance of having books available to read and enjoy. Is there any way we can raise money or send books for him?

I am a young college student, hoping to become a teacher and use the power of education to improve the lives of the women and children of North India and Pakistan.

One of the challenges to educating children in poor, rural areas is access to schools and supplies.

There are no school buses out here. Children in these areas walk to school, often many miles. Yet, Sometimes there is simply no school within walking distance.

Some families can't afford to have their children away at school all day. They need their children to work, help in the fields, care for younger children, etc.

I dreamed one night of a solution to this problem. If my students can not come to me, I will go to them.

I would like to convert a horse (or burro?)drawn 'gypsy' caravan, into a portable school. Loaded with donated books and supplies, I will be able to travel between several rural villages giving lessons and exchanging books and audio tapes, which my students can study from between visits.

While not as efficient as a classroom setting, I believe that giving these children even a basic education (reading, writing, simple math and personal health) will give them the chance to break out of the cycle of poverty and impoverishment.

Thank you Senor Soriano. Your story has renewed the inspiration I need to finish my degree and make this dream reality.
